Flagyl Tablet is an antimicrobial medication effective against bacterial and parasitic infections. It treats infections affecting various organs including the liver, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive system, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, and integumentary system.

This medication serves as prophylactic treatment to prevent postoperative infections and is also indicated for odontogenic infections, lower extremity ulcers, and decubitus ulcers. For optimal absorption, administer with meals at consistent daily intervals. Dosage varies based on infection type and severity – strict adherence to prescribed regimen is crucial. Continue full course even after symptom resolution to prevent bacterial persistence and recurrence. Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for 72 hours post-therapy to prevent disulfiram-like reactions (nausea, emesis, abdominal discomfort).

Common adverse effects include cephalalgia, xerostomia, nausea, and dysgeusia (metallic taste). These typically resolve spontaneously; consult your healthcare provider if persistent. Sugar-free lozenges may alleviate oral symptoms.

Contraindications include hypersensitivity to nitroimidazole derivatives. Exercise caution in patients with hepatic/renal impairment or neurological disorders. Pregnancy and lactation status should be disclosed before initiation.

THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS

  • Protozoal infections

CLINICAL BENEFITS

Antimicrobial Efficacy

Flagyl Tablet demonstrates broad-spectrum activity against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Its clinical applications encompass systemic infections (bacteremia, meningitis), pulmonary infections, osteoarticular infections, genitourinary infections, and gastrointestinal infections. Additional indications include periodontal abscesses, chronic venous ulcers, and pressure injuries.

The bactericidal mechanism involves inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis through free radical generation. While symptomatic improvement often occurs rapidly, complete prescribed course completion is essential to prevent antimicrobial resistance development. Teratogenic risk appears minimal based on current evidence, but obstetric consultation is recommended before prescribing to pregnant patients.
